Dr. Panait specializes in bariatric surgery, with special emphasis on laparoscopic gastric bypass, laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy, and revisional procedures. Dr. Panait also has a particular interest in robotic and other minimally invasive surgical techniques.

Dr. Panait received his medical doctor degree from Ovidius University in Constanta, Romania. After a few years of research in a NASA-sponsored laboratory at Virginia Commonwealth University, assessing telemedicine and laparoscopic surgery capabilities for space flight, he completed a general surgery residency program at St. Mary's Hospital-Yale Affiliate, in Waterbury, Connecticut, where he won the "Distinguished Research Achievement Award" in 2011. He continued his training with a fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery at Yale University, in New Haven, Connecticut, where he also served as a Clinical Instructor in the Department of Surgery. Dr. Panait subsequently joined the faculty at Drexel University as Assistant Professor of Surgery, and practiced in the Center for Surgical Weight Loss at Hahnemann University Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, until joining AtlantiCare.

Dr. Panait also has a particular interest in robotic and other minimally invasive surgical techniques with applications to the treatment of benign gallbladder disease, hematologic disorders of the spleen, abdominal wall and hiatal hernias, gastro-esophageal reflux disease, achalasia and gastroparesis.

Dr. Panait has a long track record of research and has published numerous articles on topics related to surgical simulation, new minimally invasive surgery techniques, and robotic surgery. He is board certified by the American Board of Surgery, is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and is a member of the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons, American Hernia Society, and Association for Academic Surgery.

Rafael Attiya, MD, FACS, is a board-certified general surgeon who worked in private practice for nearly two decades before he joined AtlantiCare Physician Group (APG) Surgical Associates in 2014. He began his medical career at the University of Medicine and Dentistry in Newark, New Jersey, where he received a medical degree in 1992.

Dr. Attiya completed his post-graduate education at the Montefiore Medical Center/Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York, followed by a general surgery residency at the Hahnemann University and Medical College of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, where he was appointed administrative chief resident.

Dr. Attiya has interest in laparoscopic and open hernia repair, gallbladder, colorectal surgery, benign and malignant skin lesions.

Dr. Attiya is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and is certified by the American Board of Surgery. His professional memberships include the American Medical Association, the Medical Society of New Jersey, and the Atlantic County Medical Society.
